'Pilots' to Pilates: How a Blue Mat Changed My Life

Isn't it wild how some experiences can shape your entire life? For me, that moment happened in college. Ohio University, to be exact. Let's bypass the math so I don't reveal my age.

Back to my college days. Every time I swung by the Dance Department, I'd notice a parade of students exiting a class, each carrying a blue mat. I was like, "Where did this secret society of blue mats come from, and what’s their secret?” My curiosity bubbled over, and after some time, I inquired with a friend. He pronounced it "Pilots.”  Pilots? Intriguing.

Curiosity piqued, I enrolled in the "Pilots" class the next semester and found myself amidst nearly 100 eager participants. There were no seatbelts or flight attendants, just a room buzzing with anticipation. That was my first encounter with Pilates.

Fast forward: from student to certified instructor, and now, a teacher-trainer.

The revered Joseph Pilates declared mat work as the "heart and soul" of his method. I wholeheartedly concur, and here's why:

With Pilates equipment, the springs support your movement, offering resistance and immediate feedback. However, on the mat, it's a battle against gravity, devoid of any spring assistance.

Craving genuine strength from within? It starts on the mat.
